Magical Girl Nigori: Before the Lich Fight

Dear Ms. Diary,

I have come to a decision. It's not an easy one, but my mother always told me that sometimes the hardest decisions are the best ones to make.

It's about Tupper. I know that he's a poop head, a bad fishy, and not very bright. He has more stupid ideas than Flam, and he's at least got the excuse that the big mean Aboleth is controlling his brain. I mean, yesterday he thought my aquaponies should pull the uglyboat. I mean, really, my ponies! My pretty, pretty ponies that I make with my own magical powers, and he thinks they should be pulling things?!? And not pretty chariots made out of sea shells and sparkles, either, but a big metal boat, that's basically just waiting for a big shark to make it sink. It's so ugly, I'm almost tempted to make it sink myself, except that might strand a whole bunch of gnomes, whatever those are. But they make traps that make Tupper sad, so they can't be too bad.

Where was I? Oh, yeah. Tupper is stupid.

BUT I'm going to take my mother's advice. I'm going to be the bigger person. I mean, one of us has to behave like an adult, and he's obviously not going to, and I'm a princess. So that means it's up to me. I am better than him, so I'm going to act that way, and expect him to do the same.

And if he doesn't, then maybe he can just behave like an adult rabbit.

I've always wanted a pet bunny.

Journal of Lt. Tupper, Day 246

Day 246
Started the day as a frog.

Nothing exploded during the night, or if it did I didn't hear it. The morning brought Nogori, who then decided to mess with the controls of the submersible. The good news is that I distracted her from this mad urge, the bad news is she retaliated by transforming me into a toad. After more time crawling around on the floor since I was 4, Hrogar and the sea elf-thing came back and shoved me into a pouch. When they deigned to retrieve me, we were all in the temple and I was then shortly returned to my normal state. Needless to say, I will be wary of the 'princess' now.

After that, we discussed how to handle the mind-warping terror we encountered yesterday, summarily followed by a raid on the creature's room. While it was not in residence at the time, we did uncover a wizard of questionable and malicious intent, and so beat the snot out of him. Tonight, we have all returned to sleep in the submersible save for Nogori, who is likely off somewhere bossing around small piles of rocks and making them explode when they fail to respond. Or maybe she makes them respond. Maybe there's an underwater quarry somewhere full of nothing but screaming stones, and this is her 'kingdom'.

Why the hells do I keep drawing the attention of powerful lunatics?

They do not make them like they used to

Well night came and most of us decided to sleep down in the underground temple. This was decided after we got back to the ship to find it abandoned. The water elf stormed off when it was suggested that she stay up for a watch. I wonder if she will return or leave us down here. Well anyway, we are going to search the area more in the morning hopefully we find that creature again so we can kill it.

Well we did not find the creature but we did find a Psionic. Fortunately we were able to kill him fairly quick. Only Hrogar seem to take some damage from the fight. We will be heading back up to the surface in order to rest. We discovered a crypt that well need to be explored, but it will be nice to do it with some more of our spells ready.

I must say Flam seems to have issues fending off creatures that can control ones mind/actions. The creature forced him to attack us again. He first tried to kill the bard, fortunately I was able to get him to focus on me. After taking several hits we were able to take him down. We will need to tie him up. This attacking other members can not be allowed.

Magical Girl Nigori: After Defeating Flam

Dear Ms. Diary,

Oh, my! So much has happened since I wrote last!

Flam was a bad fishie again, and tried to kill Herogar! Now he's unconscious, and I'm certainly not going to heal him. I mean, what if he actually kills Herogar!?! I'd be so sad!

Then the tiny bard girl was a bad fishie, too. The paladins were camping, and she thought I should take a watch. Me! A princess! I told her no, that that was something servant's did, but she tried to make me do it anyway. So I went and slept in my own house.

Oooh! But the good things is, that since only one of them can breath water at a time, they sent Herogar to wake me up, so that was good, and he asked me nicely to help the paladins. So I did, some, but I didn't help that stupid bard swim. She can figure it out herself. It was kind of funny watching her try, though.

Oh, and Tupper is a bad fishie, too. I was going to pull a lever, and he told me that princesses don't pull levers, which made sense, because princesses should have servants to pull them for me, so I told him to pull it, but he said he wasn't my servant and wouldn't do it, but that I should either, and I told him he was too my servant, and that he had to pull the lever RIGHT NOW or I was going to turn him into a frog, but he didn't, so I did. And then he wasn't even a good frog. He hopped away from me! So I left him in the boat until Hrogar made me get him back. Stupid Hrogar. He may be dreamy, but that's just not very nice.

Oh, and some other bad fishie who was invisible tried to kill me. But I got away, and when I came back he was dead. So the Paladins aren't totally useless.

And Mystera is gone. So I'm stuck here with 3 bad fishies, one paladins who's okay, but isn't very nice either, and Hrogar, and he's only okay sometimes.

They didn't even listen to me when I told them they needed foil hats. And now look at what's happened.

Oh, well. I suppose I should go make sure they don't drown.

Talk to you again real soon, Ms. Diary.

Sztuczka's Journal

So we went back to the underwater city place and started searching the place and found an (dramatic tone) obsidian mirror and nogori the mermaid girl went through it and we all eventually followed and met someone that they apparently had met before and we came back before anything really bad happened and when we continued on we found a little pond that had a monster in it and i decided to inspire courage because nobody really wanted to try recklessness eventhough i think it to be the most handy thing ever but you know, what do i know? i am just a pint-sized bard. okay maybe not pint-sized, more like half-pint-sized, but you know what i mean. and then a wall of stone trapped the monster so that it could not get away and it turned out to be an illusion anyways and not the real thing and right now i am wishing we had remembered our armour because i cannot remember the last time i actually got hurt but at least the mermaid girl knows how to heal and i totally forgot til after the fact that my robe has cure serious wound potions on it.... must remember that for next time!

Journal of Lt. Tupper, Day 245 (revised)

Day 245
Apparently the Temple of Deep Satchmo is elsewhere, and the place we found turned out to be one of the Temples of the Sunken City (not to be confused with Nogori's hometown, however sunken and city-like it may be). After dealing with the joys of underwater lightning traps and soggy crates of rotten fish, we found an airlock and yet another obsidian teleport gate. Because we have the collective survival instincts of a dead rat, we all stepped through it. On the other side was the same shoreline and cliff as before, with Rann and a monstrous tiger-like thing waiting for us.

After some disquietingly polite discourse, Rann remarked that Nogori's oft-abused pet turtle was not a 'proper' animal, and set forth to show us how to make it 'proper.' This appears to involve an altar, and creates something you would not want to pat lest it bite your fingers off with its eyeballs, which are on its back. Mistera was understandably agitated at this, and endeavored to destroy the demonstration otter with fire. This led to shaky relations with Rann.

After politely excusing ourselves for our lives, we got back through the obsidian gate and found that Rann's 'pet' had followed us through. Attempts at containment of the creature attracted the attention of its master, and brought about an agreement between us, her, and it that the 'pet' could feast on turtles somewhere else. The gate was then promptly smashed after Rann returned through it. Behind the gate was a hidden room with a potted tree, similar to the ones found outside Izmir and Point of Origin. (The tree, not the room.) Mistera, having ultimately failed in the slaying of the freakish otter, bashed the pot to pieces. Besides the gate room, there are two wells, some rooms set aside for living, and a large pool with a giant mind-raping sea monster in it. Yes. Fortunately it fled from us for some reason before it could get us to kill each other.

Then we decided to head back to the sub, where we found it devoid of gnomes and Hrefna. No record of what happened in the captain's log. Also, gnomish sea captains are JERKS. Best that I can surmise is the crew evacuated due to impending equipment failure. However, the alternative is to return to the temple and camp there. And because that is godsdamn stupid, most everyone else has opted for it. I am the self-assigned guard of the submarine for now.

As it stands, there is a smashed obsidian gate, a book entitled "Manual of the Planes," and both a hideous water-breathing tiger-monster and a large telepathic horror from the depths of the ocean on the loose; over most of which I am deigning to sleep while inside a gnomish tin barrel. If I live through the night, then hopefully the rest will contact me tomorrow. If I don't live through the night, then what's left of me will drift down to them eventually.

Yes, I will be sleeping well tonight.

From the Journal of Hrogar

We started searching through the temple that is located under the underwater ruins the Sea-Witch was using as a base of operations. As we left the submarine, the sharks and squids are still circling it. I fear that their presence is not because of the engine like we were hoping, but something far more foreboding. It may be that we are being watched and followed.

After some initial exploring, we found a part of the temple where we could clear out the water and continue searching in the air. At this point, I thought about going back for our armor, but for some reason, I didn't act on this idea. Curse my insufferable inaction! Truly, I won't be a worthy champion of Halmyr until I start acting on good ideas.

Anyway, we searched through the dry part of the temple, and eventually came across one of the Obsidian Mirrors. I wanted to see what was on the other side, and Nigori (who is not quite as irritating as I was worried about) wanted to see too, so we went through to check it out. As soon as we were on the other side, Nigori tried to throw herself off a cliff. Apparently she was overcome by a spell left to guard the gate or some such. I was able to keep her from succeeding in said task until she returned to her senses. We then brought the others through to see what it was like. Then we met Raan again.

Raan. I'd forgotten why we hadn't gone through any of the gates in a while, then I remembered when we met Raan again. She's just as dangerously insane as I remember. Mistera really didn't like Raan and her pseudonatural 'pets'. I can't blame her. Luckily we were able to get back alive, and destroy the mirror (although Raan's pet 'tiger' got trapped on our side, and I fear we have loosed yet one more evil upon the world). After breaking the mirror, Mistera demanded to know who Raan was, and after finding we'd met Raan before, Mistera asked why we didn't kill Raan considering she (or at least one of her personalities) is obviously up to no good. On a practical level, one of the reasons is that the first time we met Raan she was obviously out of our league power wise. She may still be so, although it's less of a foregone conclusion at this time. Perhaps the next time we meet Raan, we will have to do battle, and if not the next time, it is almost certainly an eventuality. Knowing that, I must work on a strategy to use when we come to that point.

So we continued exploring the temple, and came across a sea-monster, one with psionic attacks. It was able to control Fflam into attacking me, and without our armor we weren't much of a threat, I feel we're lucky to have survived. It escaped, but no doubt it will return, and so shall we, but better prepared this time. I intend to bring my armor next time, as well as any gear I still have that had been intended for the Kraken, and any other gear that might be useful for such endeavors. I shall have to talk with the others (especially the magic users) about what tactics we might use next time.

Musings of Mistera - The Atrocities!

(Two in one)

I'm sad to leave Cypress behind.

He's been with me for most of my journey, but the water is not a suitable place for one such as he. I've been visiting him as much as I can between our voyages out to sea, but I don't know how long we will be out on the water this time, in search of the temples that house unspeakable evils, yet house the means to salvation.

I hold him close, rubbing up against his fur and planting a gentle kiss upon his head.

"I will return for you, I swear it."

He doesn't even have to nod - he knows.

---

I must be careful how I present found treasure to the paladins.

It turns out that part of the deal that was struck with the Gnomes for safe passage was that a percentage of the treasure found would go to them. During one of our forays into the depths, I stumbled across a beautiful gem. I carefully picked it up with a piece of cloth, and then later showed it to Hrefna. She identified it as a Gem of True Seeing. She then told the paladins of the find, who quickly appraised it at some gods-high value.

Dear gods, either we need to give them the gem or give them ample compensation for the find.

That is, if it doesn't go missing.

---

We've encountered a very interesting sea elf on our journey - fashions herself a princess. I'm not sure what lineage she actually is, although she is delusional enough to be royalty.

I wonder if she rides a sea pony.

---

May her soul be damned.

We found her beyond the obsidian mirror, a true sight to behold. What evils there are beyond the dark reflection, enough for Princess Precious to almost throw herself off the cliff.

And worse! There I beheld a true atrocity against nature! It was a otter, but not - pustules covered its body, dark sores lay underneath its matted fur, open wounds oozing. It was horrible to behold! And so I had to do it, Artemis, I had to try and release its soul! Burn its soul away from the wretched flesh! Let it return to the cycle of life anew, to be reborn!

But damn the necromancer! She raised it from its ashes! To regain its same form, but now with wretched burn marks! Looking into its eyes was heartbreaking, so I did it again! It must be released!

Why does it keep coming back!

Artemis, save this poor creature!

And another creatures get away

We investigated the under water temple. It has a lot of similarities to the Gnome ship. There are doors in here that seal off areas and somehow water is drained from those rooms. We continued exploring the facility and found a black mirror that was a port that allowed us to travel across the world. While there we meet a very unusual person. She seemed to have a split personally and a fetish for perverting creatures by sending the far away plans. Not surprising this upset the druid. Area outside of the empire is interesting. Back in my village a person like this would have been put out of her miser before she could do harm to people. It was decided that we go back and break the mirror.

After some more investigation of the temple we found a creature that was evil. As we attempted to kill it, it took over Flam’s mind and forced him into attacking us. The creature also cast a spell on me that for a time I was not able to act. I had lost my ability to control my actions, fortunately that faded quickly. I proceed to attack it, but apparently it had already escaped and all I was attacking was a shadow. If not being able to kill this creature was not bad enough, I lost my ability to breathe air. Fortunately the water elf was able to cure it. We will have to chase down this creature. A creature like this can not be allowed to roam free, but I think we should go get our armor first.

Magical Girl Nigori: Day Following Aboleth

Dear Ms. Diary,

Oh my gosh! Today I almost died!

I tried to throw myself off a cliff! And it wasn't like the last time, either, when that Lethilan called my doll fat. It was, like, for real, and for no reason at all!

Well, maybe no reason. It might have had something to do with that mean girl with the bad pets, but I don't know. All I know is that I walked through this mirror, but not like the kind that you can see yourself in, unless you were really dark, like maybe an obsidian golem, because that's basically what you'd look like, since the mirror is pretty much just obsidian. Except not really, I guess, because walking into obsidian would hurt. So maybe it's something else.

But anyway, so I walked through, and all of a sudden I wanted to die. Like really, really bad. So bad I tried to throw myself off a cliff. And this wasn't underwater or anything, so it would have been off a cliff for real, and not just like floating down for a little while.

BUT! Just when I was about to hurl myself off the ledge, Herogar saved me! He leaped onto me and held me down until I didn't want to die anymore. Swoon! It's just the kind of thing a big, strong, handsome paladin would do!

Which isn't like he's not a handsome paladin, I just kind of always thought they'd be bigger. He's kind of small, and not very strong, but it's kind of cute.

And did I mention he saved me?

So we were going to have a party, right, because I wasn't dead and stuff. So Herogar went back to get everybody else, while me and my new friend Mystera got changed (Well, I did. Mystera didn't have any party clothes magic) and this mean girl came out of nowhere. I mean, she wasn't mean all the time, but then she'd get really mean all of a sudden, like she was having her lady's time of the month or something. And she said squirtle wasn't a proper pet, which was mean and hurt his feelings. I mean , yeah, he has that little bladder control issue, but that's not really his fault, and it's rude to bring it up. And besides, her pet wasn't better. My new friend Mystera made it better by making it dead and crunchy. Except the mean girl didn't like it, until I told her Mystera was making the weird otter thing better.

But then her mean kitty followed us, and I tried to make a nice house for it, the kind where he couldn't eat or breath and would die, but the mean girl followed us through the mirror, even though it was broken, but I told the mean kitty that it couldn't eat Squirtle, but that it could have some other turtles if it wanted. I hope it chokes on those stupid dragon turtles.

Only then we found an aboleth, and it wasn't the good kind. It was the kind that wasn't dead, and then Flam was a bad fishie and tried to hurt my new friend Herogar, and then he didn't turn into a frog when I wanted him to. But Herogar just shrugged him off and shot at the Aboleth, but then it broke through my ice wall and ran away.

Luckily, Herogar wasn't too hurt. But I guess the Aboleth is what's making this place bad, so the paladins have to kill it.

Ooh, maybe that means Herogar will have to stick around a while. Swoon.

Okay, I've got to go, Ms. Diary. I'll talk to you later.

Manuel of the Planes: Chapter 1

Being an Account of How I Came to Leave Behind the Prime Material Plane and Journey Into Other Realms Where I Would Meet My Lady Love

There are those who might say that I, Manuel, am a liar. There are those who will say that I have never left this plane, that I have made up everything that I write here or, at best, read a book that described the planes which I claim to go to. To those people, I say this: you are lying bastards, and I will have my way with your wives and daughters. For I, Manuel, have traveled the planes as surely as any Demigod or Elemental.

Those who believe me a liar usually believe that no man travels the planes on accident, that I must have been some manner of potent wizard, capable of great magical feats. And while it is true that I am capable of some small feats of magic, I am not so vain as to say that I am a great wizard. I am, at my best, no more than a simple storyteller, a liar when I must be, and capable of the odd act of magic when it is required of me. It is for this that some claim that my story is untrue: that I am a liar, and an admitted one. For this, some say that all things that I say must also be lies. But this is not true.

I began, as I have said, my journey to the planes quite on accident. There was a woman, you see. She was an older woman, perhaps a thousand years, and an the wife of a powerful elven wizard. I was young, and foolish, and believed that I was more than a match for her husband. I believed, foolishly, that he would not have some manner of scrying spell upon his wife. I was not wholly foolish, and had detected for such spells upon her, but because I could see none, I thought that there were none.

If only I had been more cautious!

But, where women are concerned, there is only so much caution that a man of my urges can exercise, particularly when faced with such beauty as was hers.

And she was beautiful. Her thighs were as delicate as an elephants tusks, and as pale. She was thin, like a twig, but a twig which was finely formed and shaped to be pleasing to the eye. Her tongue was like a frog, but less disgusting. And her passion was like that of a woman a tenth of her age.

I convinced her husband that I must perform for him, personally, at a private party at his house. I told him that I would tell to him a special story, one which I save for my most special and favorite audiences. He asked me what I wished for payment, and I named a certain magical item which I knew to be in his possession. It was seven times my normal asking price, but I knew that to win my way into his home, and into the arms of his wife, who until then I had only seen through the windows of his home, I would have to convince him that I was serious.

He believed me, or so I thought. He planned a party, with only a handful of guests, and promised me that they would be the most sophisticated audience that I could wish for. I told him that, for a performance such as this, I would need to come to his home in the afternoon before the gathering, to get a proper feel for the location where I would be performing. I knew that he would be at his tower, away from the house, and unable to guard his beautiful wife. He agreed. I thought that he was blind to my lies, but I would prove to be wrong.

That afternoon, I arrived at his house as I had promised. He was not there, but a golem let me in. It led me to the room of the performance, and I went. I sat down, as though to practice, or take in the room. But that was only my cover.

I left an illusion of myself sitting on the floor while I, invisible, stole away through the house in search of the wizard's wife.

I found her on the second floor of the house, in such a state as I have earlier described. I looked her over for magical protections, but found none, and so I believed myself safe.

What occurred between us is not for the telling by a gentleman, but if a gentleman is reading this, than I can guess that his imagination will provide the scene that it would be improper of me to provide.

All that I will say is that, at my moment of maximum satisfaction, I heard a sound. I turned to discover that her husband, the wizard, had appeared behind me, and he did not look entertained.

I may have been young and foolish, but even then I knew that there are some situations which I cannot talk my way out of, no matter how good of a liar I may be. An angry husband is just this sort of thing.

And so I attempted to leave, by magical means. In my youth, and my foolishness, I had not realized that he would be guarded against just such an act.

When I awoke, I was in quite a different place indeed.

Read on, gentle reader, to learn where Manuel awoke and what he did there.

Sztuczka's Journal

So when the submersible got back to port it was breaking down and the warnings were saying to run and when we got out the hatch we realized we were in port but it was loads of fun anyways and we met up with Tupper and Hrogar and one of the newer members of the group already left and the other one stayed and then we went in search of information that could help us and we got a lot of tales of merfolk and something up north so we are going to go north via the submersible and stop by the ruins of the sea-witch along the way and I am not sure what is in store next, but it ought to be pretty darn awesome because I am travelling once more with the Paladins and yay!

(later entry)

We met merfolk! at the ruins of the sea-witch's palace! how exciting! i never knew they really existed! and the princess is very nice... though i missed her name. and Mystera, the druid that has joined the paladins has made it so that we can breathe underwater! it is very exciting indeed! We found a few things that look interesting in the area, but we need more air to fully explore them and that will be tomorrow hopefully and gee it is exciting to be back with the paladins! and merfolk! who knew they were actually real?

Journal of Lt. Tupper, Day 239-244

Day 239
Hangovers and gnomes. These things should not be combined.

The others returned today with Stuckzhah in tow, also known as the gnome bardess that has latched firmly onto the "romantic" idea that I lust for dead people. The reunion was not pleasant. I think I may have convinced her of how utterly stupid it all is, but not before she composed an aria on the subject. I… do not even know anymore.

Insanity aside, we reviewed our mission for the sake of the new folk in the group. As it stands, we have located 6 of the supposed 13 temples of the Sunken City. We have had a hand in dismantling 5 of these, leaving 7 to be found and 8 to be presumably mucked through. This includes Stonekeep and one inside the Sunken City itself. Of the three pieces of the Staff of Ehlonna, a weapon of immense power, we have found two but only kept one. Our current quest is to find the final piece of the Staff and… work out what to do next. Assembly seems the obvious choice, though if what Ragnar believed is true (that Leaf is the fourth component required for operation of the Staff) then doing so would be difficult. At any rate, they're in marginally better hands with us than the faction of drow that have been opposing us.

With all this in mind, we have set about looking for more of the temples; starting with rumors about underwater ruins, the old lair of the kraken, and the potential advice of merfolk up along the northern coast. This means enlisting the aid of the gnomes and their submersible again. This means more gnomes.

Even Herakles is wary of gnomes in large numbers.

Day 243
Dreams have consisted of cheerful gnomes dismantling the submersible as it goes along in order to fix it, leaving us to drown and drift about behind it in a wake of bolts and plating. Have not slept much.

The others investigated the kraken cave today. I stayed inside the boat, because I enjoy the agony that is gnomish freestyle maintenance ballads of concerns about maneuvering underwater. They did not find another temple, though there was a valuable magical gem left behind. Squids and other aquatic wildlife have begun to follow the vessel: though they have not attacked us, the night is young. We are moving on to the site of the underwater ruins.

Herakles, if you can read what I write here, if you know my pain… stay the hells away. It's bad enough.

Day 244
The engines were attracting the sharks. The gnomes can shut them off when they're not needed, but that is still a clear sign to get off this boat.

So we went diving off the side of the submersible while it was surfaced, and found the ruins where they should be. We also found the local mermaids, or mer-elves, or whatever. We found a group of people with gills and blue skin swimming among the ruins. Their leader appears to be either insane or a princess of their people, potentially both. She calls herself Nogori. As for the ruins, we have located the entrance to "The Temple of Deep Satchmo", but were not prepared to investigate it further today.

Note to self: do not use gnomish inventions designed to dry your clothes. The socks I tried it out on are fine, save that they are now a disturbingly bright shade of green and orange respectively. Apparently this does not happen often, but once is enough in my case.
~

Addendum to note to self: Do not drip-dry clothes over the starboard "power coupling," for fear of engine failure.

From the Journal of Hrogar

The Kraken seems to have left the area, we are hoping that without direction from the Sea Witch, that it will stop harassing people. And Kalidas has apparently left as well. While he proved useful, his tendency to want to kill team-mates at the drop of a hat will not be missed.

We checked back at the Kraken's former lair and then the Sea Witch's to look for a way into a temple similar to the others that the group as been seeking out and cleansing. While searching the ruins around the Sea Witch's lair, we found a group of sea-elves. We are currently working with them, and together we were able to find the entrance we both sought.

After we rest and the magic users regain their spells, we're going to go down and search through the temple. One of the sea-elves, "Magical Girl Nigori", gives me an uneasy feeling. Not that she's evil or dangerous. More like she may be more annoying than Tupper and Alcander combined with a gnome. Truly, the gods are testing me. I may be wrong, she may not be that bad, and she seems quite useful either way. But something just seems off about her...

Kalidas Leaves

Kalidas has decided to leave. I think he did not agree with my decision when it came to Flam. I stand by my position. There is nothing wrong looking into other options to try and save an individual. Anyways, we headed back out to sea to try and locate another temple. Supposedly there is a group of mermaids that might be able to guide us to one. One the way we will go check out the kraken and the wizard’s lair. We will be calling upon the services of the Gnomes. They seem to be a good resource for getting around, as long as you do not talk to them. I will write more once we get back to port.

Magical Girl Nigori: Day 1

Dear Ms. Diary,

I got some new fishies today!

They're not quite like the usual kind. Their boat's weird, for one thing. It's a little like a whale, except it can be underwater more. Except that I think it might be more like a really big sharks, since all the other sharks really want to be it's friend. So far, the friend sharks haven't seemed too hungry. I hope it stays that way. I'd hate to have to hurt one of the big fishes.

But back to the fishies. They already had somebody let them breathe underwater! So they weren't doing the flailing-throat-grabbing-turning-purple thing that most of the fishes do. But whoever does their magic isn't super good, because it stopped working for a couple of seconds. The one fishie, I think he said his name was Herogar or something, looked like he was going to have a seizure. But he got better.

And one of the fishies could turn into an otter. Then she could really swim around, instead of the funny flailing that most fishies do. A lot of fishies make frogs look graceful, but she doesn't. The rest of them, not so good, though.

And I met a bard! They're so cute! Bards are really small, like sea-gnomes, but the better they are, the smaller they are! I wonder what makes one better than others. This one talks really fast, which isn't very lady-like, but she's okay.

They went back to their ship for the night. But tomorrow they're going to come back and we're going to go exploring. If we can get in the gate, anyway. I wonder if a giant squid or something could open those gates. Maybe I'll find out, and surprise them in the morning!

I think I'd better take care of them, though. Sashy says I should, and they do seem kind of bewildered. I don't know how they managed to deal with that nasty old sea witch, but they did, so I should be nice to them.

Anyway, I'm really busy and I've got to go now. Talk to you again real soon, Ms. Diary. I promise!

Journal of Lt. Tupper, Day 235-238

Day 235
Slept in. Woke up panicked that I had forgotten something, remembered that I had nothing to remember, and fell back asleep before the irony hit me.

The city has a library, a big one. Now I could just lay about and read their collection of copper dreadfuls, but I'm still technically on duty today. So, I've spent the better part of today researching the Drow language. Given the lack of a proper dictionary for it and that there are no fluent speakers readily around with which to practice, it is rough goings. I really hope I don't have need of this knowledge in the field anytime soon.

Judging from available evidence, Herakles must have a dire feud with every water deity in existence.

Day 236
Almost feel guilty for sleeping so well.

Translation is slow work. They have a Drow to High Elven Dictionary. I don't know High Elven, so I use their High Elven to Elven dictionary. I also don't know Elven, so I use their Elven to Dwarven dictionary. And since my dwarven's a bit rusty, I need a Dwarven to Common dictionary for the odd word every now and then. That, combined with the actual book I'm trying to translate (a thick tome about cooking, maybe), means I have a table all to myself in the library. One of the librarians is nice enough to bring me tea every now and then, or at least some sort of digestible liquid. It is brown, at any rate.

Herakles tried reading once. He got frustrated halfway through, and demolished the signpost.

Day 237
Oh ye gods if I never see another apostrophe it will be too soon.

Day 238
The others have returned from their adventures. They have apparently slain the sea witch; wherein Kalidas went blind again, Fflam became controlled by some phantasmic horror, and the sea captain abandoned them due to cargo issues. Most of them are going back out on another boat in a bid to save the kraken or poison Fflam or something. Hrogar and I have stayed behind as part of the vanguard of getting drunk off our asses. I do not quite know why, but I have had a creeping feeling of doom all evening.

Herakles has a head that can double as a plow.

Musings of Mistera - Get Kraken!

(Two posts in one)

I pondered through the night, thinking of what spells would best attack the Kraken in its lair. Water breathing spells, a Quench for the ship in case of fires, snare abilities, poisons and contagions... anything that could slow the Kraken and deal consistent damage over time. I only hoped that my other comrades were being as thorough as I am.

--

Hrefna is very valuable to our party - she's located where the sea witch and the kraken are, which are two different places. I'm more prepared to fight a kraken than a sea witch, but it makes more sense to go after the sea witch, and we head out.

I keep asking Artemis what I am doing on this mission, since we have sucessfully freed the soul of Alcander. The staff is still split asunder, so perhaps that is why I am still here. My closest companion has since gone, and at least two others have split from the party as well. There are many paladins in this group, and then Tupper.

Alas, Tupper wasn't able to join us on this voyage to the kraken, but as I look up the mast and see Kalidas as lookout, I have a feeling that Tupper is safest on dry land as it is.

I feel safe and protected as the stoic Kalidas watches over us all, bow always in hand.

---

It was a trap.

Swimming down to the sea witch's lair turned unfruitful, and swimming up to the surface was already tiring enough before a strong electical charge surged its way through my body, painfully spasming my muscles.

The sea witch is above.

---

I call out to Kalidas and Hrefna, scanning the skies for the terrible one. I see large shadows of dragons, sihlouettes of sharks, and can't grasp how outnumbered we really are.

"They're not real!" Hrefna cries out through the storm, the wind almost stealing her words. I look to the sky, and Hrefna has cast Faerie Fire in the clouds. Beyond the cursing blind Kalidas, I see her form at last.

Solace of suns
Friends of fire
Burn my foes
With heart's desire!

A column of fire from the Gods strikes her. I hear her screech of terror, then Kalidas turns his head swiftly to the sound, loosing his volley. I call upon the gods once more, watching their wrath char her skin and burn her hair. She becomes nothing more than a flaming mass descending from the heavens.

---

I should have warned the paladins of the magic contained within the necklace.

It was stupid of me to let them break such a powerful artifact so close to sentient life.

Flam's been cursed by the taint of the Sea Witch.

Artemis, please let there be another way to cleanse his soul.

---

I'm extremely glad to have made such an... interesting friend in this port. He really knows his stuff, and I only hope that I can learn more from him at some point. He knows about the delicate balance of nature, and how to use nature's bounty to both help and harm.

He described a way in which we could help rid Flam of this possession, a way that mimics death so that he can be saved without having his entire body completely dead. Hrogar also seemed pleased at the smaller cost of such an approach.

All we need now is to get him away from souls while this happens, which means a ship - the port guards will not let us into the city proper, not even to leave. Time to talk to A. Hab.

---

Curse A. Hab. I can't help but hope that her lack of survival insight and unwillingness to prepare will cost her dearly someday.

Time to arrange other transport.

---

The plan worked, Flam is safe. I really must thank my new friend for all of his support.

Perhaps this is why I'm still with this group - most are Paladins, honor-bound to protect the weak, never mislead or trick, and other such extremes in the name of good.

I hold no such illusions. Sometimes the ends justify the means. Sometimes the means a Paladin could never justify. I'm here to do whatever the means are to protect nature and preserve the balance.

And another one almost bites the dust

Things went better then planned. The wizard ended up attacking and the skills of the druid and Kalidas was able to kill her. Unfortunately some other problems arose. As I destroyed a gem that the wizard wore a spirit went into Flam. Flam proceeded to pass out and then proceed to detect as evil. So I started to tie and gag him, with the help of the Capitan and we made for port. Once there I went to the temple of Pelor to ask their advice on how we could get rid of the evil spirit. They suggested drowning him, then using a resurrection spell. I asked if there was any other way and they suggested that there might be people in town that can help, well in the shady part of town. So I asked the druid to look into it figuring she would have better luck then I would.

After some time had passed The druid came back and was successful at finding another solution. Apparently we can give him a poison that will fake the body into thinking it is dying. Then the spirit will leave. So the druid, Kalidas and I are headed down sore to put Flam through this ritual. We had to book passage on another boat because Ahab had a break down and told us all to leave. I will remain in service of this group to find out more about this evil. Kalidas on the other hand may not want to stay. I will talk to him about this.

Return of the Sztuczka

Part of what I love about travelling is that you never know who you will run into and where! It is rather exciting. Today the submersible picked up passengers. Humans and dwarfs. Well, dwarf. The dwarf had been cursed by an evil spirit by an evil sea witch… I must get this story for posterity! And apparently there was a falling out with the captain whose ship they had been using and they needed transport to a distant location so that they could magic the evil out of him and the Druid seems to know what she is doing so we took them on board and of course rumors were flying up and down the ship but it was not until the next morning that I discovered that the dwarf with the evil spirit that we took on board was none other than Fflam and a bunch of companions I have not met yet and Tupper and Hrogar are back in the port waiting for them to return with a hopefully not dead Fflam and Arcadius left the group for some reason that Fflam was not too sure of and Jacob left because he got in trouble for using magic and Ragnarr and Chris left because they went plane hopping with some little girl they took out of a nearby keep because they need to keep her safe from something though Fflam was not quite clear in his communication as to what that something was but I have a feeling it has to do with the big fight and I found the paladins again! Thanks Pelor and Herakles! My new skills will be put to good use! Huzzah!

Sztuczka: snippets from earlier entries

I get so busy I forget to write in my journal! I have long since left Al-Andalus! I ran into a few problems with friends of my patrons. My patrons tried to smooth things over, but it was in everyone’s best interest that I leave. I have been through a lot of the land between home and here, so the only direction I have not gone is across the straights. I hear it is hot over there, but I have found a ship or two willing to take me. We will be sailing along the coast for the most part and I have new things I can learn!

One of my companions on the ship is a war chanter! He said I could learn, but I would have to give up my spells. I rely heavily on those when performing in court! But I have the strangest feeling that I am going to be seeing the Paladins again, so it may actually be useful for me to give up my spellcraft to learn this new craft.

I have no idea where the Paladins are though. That will make it tough to find them. I have no doubts though, that if I am meant to find them, that Pelor and Herakles will guide my way… Somehow… I hope?

(a few weeks later)

Nearing the lands where Herakles’ followers live. Neither he nor Pelor have given me any directions… but there is a ship of gnome. A submersible! It has been so long since I have seen my own people. I hopped on board the submersible. It is so amazing to be travelling underwater!

And somehow, I think I may be on the path that I need to be on! So good to be around gnomes again!

Kalidas: Fuck This Boat Shit

The Dark Mother be praised.

The sea witch is dead. The second time we battled her, we gave her the death, that she make something better of herself in the next life.

Though I am not convinced that she was making any better use of this life than the group I now travel with. I had thought that perhaps Kali had guided me to join with Azan so that I might find this group of people, blessed by the gods as they seem to be.

I cannot believe this is the group I am supposed to journey with. One man, the dwarf, was cursed with an evil spirit. The people, knowing their local gods and spirits, gave very clear instructions as to how to deal with it: he was to be killed, and resurrected afterwards if his god willed it. Yet this man, Flam, a paladin, knowing with all the force of his honor that the only certain way to cure himself of this evil spirit was to drown, refused to do it. Instead, he preferred the back-room machinations of their "druid," a word which I believe must mean "argumentative liar."

Even then, having a plan that was sold to us by someone we do not know and do not trust, choosing to undergo a course of action that was not that set by the servants of the gods, we dallied. The druid and this A. Hab person bickered for an hour, while Flam lingered on the docks, putting unknown numbers of people in danger.

In the end, we were forced to leave Hab on the docks and find a boat of gnomes, of all things. When gnomes prove more honorable than your own companions, something has gone horribly wrong.

And, of course, they have a friend among the gnomes.

Kali, give me patience, but if ever there was a group of individuals who needed another chance at life, and badly, this group is it. Yet I know that they are touched by the gods, and they are not mine to kill.

By which I must assume that this group of children is not at all where I am supposed to be. When even he that I have chosen as my master here commands me not to give death to a possessed dwarf, I must ask myself whether I might not find more useful employ elsewhere.

Kali, guide my feet.

Guide them away from here.
